The Rear Window is proud to welcome back Brian Kalinec, who makes his second appearance on our stage (with Erik Stucky and Adam Pope 3/22/18) and KJ, who makes her Rear Window debut!
BRIAN KALINEC Brian Kalinec is an award-winning, Houston, Texas-based Americana/folk singer-songwriter. His East Texas roots have combined with his urban experience to form his own particular view of the world, which is reflected in his songs. A native of Beaumont, Brian picked up the guitar at an early age and began a life spent crafting songs and nurturing songwriters. His writing has drawn favorable comparisons to that of Woody Guthrie, John Steinbeck, Rodney Crowell, and Jim Croce, and it resonates with audiences, fellow songwriters, and music lovers alike.
Songwriting has always been a passionate drive in Brian's musical life, one for which he has been recognized again and again. A past president of the venerable Houston Songwriters Association, Brian has a long and fruitful association with Texas songwriting. Brian co-produced the annual "Sonny Throckmorton Songwriter's Festival," sponsored by the HSA, in the 90s. He was a featured performer at the 75th anniversary of the discovery of the famed Spindletop gusher in Beaumont. He performed a song he wrote for his daughter Kerri titled "Challenged Child" at the 1980 National Convention of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf.
Over the years, Brian has received significant recognition across the US for both his songwriting and musicianship -- winning contests like the Songwriter Serenade in Texas and the Big Top Chautauqua in Wisconsin, and taking second place in the Woody Guthrie Songwriting Competition. Brian participated in the "Shoulder to the Stone" project benefitting the Haitian relief effort and was one of the artists on the compilation CD. continued at www.briankalinec.com
KJ Singer/Songwriter/Performer/Motivational Speaker “KJ” has a short first name since her last name of Reimensnyder-Wagner is extremely LONG! Those who know her and know her music, realize that just the initials “KJ” are all you need to recognize this positive-energy performer throughout the US and UK.
Having been left at a camp long after other children were picked up one summer (due to a scheduling misunderstanding between parents and camp), KJ turned a scary situation into a profitable one at the age of eight. The counselor who stayed behind to meet her parents later that evening was a guitar player who began teaching KJ guitar chords and encouraged her to overcome any obstacles in life through music! At the age of 12, KJ received her first guitar from her parents, originally meant for KJ AND her two sisters. But KJ immediately fell in love with this guitar and took it over!
Once shy KJ, could then begin writing songs that year, celebrating the birth of puppies, honoring neighbors and friends through song lyrics and then later battling the blues of teenage love-losses through guitar therapy shortly after. As she matured, songs spoke of land conservation ideas, overcoming physical challenges by others (spokesperson for Cancer and RSD), and the stories of fine people who have filled her travel schedule with “home-like” situations – and lyrics- throughout the years. continued at www.kjsmile.com
